38 minutes ago 0

Several patrons at a Chili’s Grill & Bar experienced chemical burns after consuming margaritas containing an industrial cleaner. The incident occurred at the Forest City, North Carolina location, as reported by the Foothills Health District.

Three patrons consumed drinks made with the cleaner, mistaken for sugar or salt. Two employees also showed symptoms after exposure.

Preliminary Findings

The issue began when an employee received an industrial degreaser from a contractor and stored it in an unlabeled container. This container was then left in the bar area. Days later, another employee found the container and, assuming it contained sugar or salt, used it to set up the margarita station.

Upon opening, three customers drank the contaminated margaritas and experienced burns around their mouths. After alerting staff, two employees tasted the substance and reported similar effects.

Company Response

Chili’s responded swiftly, stating their commitment to supporting affected individuals. They emphasized their concern for the health and safety of guests and employees. The company’s account differed from the health district’s report, noting two guests and two team members affected.

Following the incident, the Foothills Health District suspended the restaurant’s food service permit. It was reinstated after determining that all other food safety standards were met.

Health District’s Reminder

This incident underscores the need for proper labeling, storage, and handling of chemicals as outlined in the North Carolina Food Code. These practices prevent chemical contamination and safeguard public health.
– Jason Masters, Health Director, Foothills Health District

The district reminded establishments of the crucial importance of these protocols.
