Luka Doncic Shows Defensive Growth with Impressive Stats

6 hours ago 0

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has often faced inquiries about his defensive skills throughout his career in the NBA. Now, a notable statistic supports the claim that he has improved significantly in this area.

The Lakers’ official social media account shared a graphic revealing that Doncic currently leads the NBA in defensive field goal percentage on two-point attempts for the ongoing season. Opponents manage to score at a meager 21.9% rate for two-point shots when defended by Doncic. This percentage is the lowest among players who have taken on at least 30 such defensive attempts during the 2026-27 regular season.

This statistic surfaces days after Doncic addressed critiques of his defense following the Lakers’ win over the Toronto Raptors. “Obviously, I’m not the best defender in the NBA, but I think this year, I really took a step forward,” Doncic expressed on Sunday.

The six-time All-NBA honoree affirmed that external opinions do not shake his confidence. He stated, “Obviously, people are going to talk what they want to talk [about] me. But I know, and my team knows, that I’m better this year.”

His standout performance against Toronto highlighted his progress. Doncic scored 45 points, collected 15 rebounds, made five steals, and drew three charges in the Lakers’ 131-125 victory.

ESPN Research noted that he became the first player to register five steals and draw three charges in a single game since player tracking started in the 2013-14 season.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick commended Doncic’s dedication to defense, particularly his readiness to draw charges. Center Walker Kessler also supported Doncic’s reputation, stating that he does not receive enough credit for his defensive efforts.

This latest data point adds another aspect to Doncic’s impressive start this season, where he is averaging a league-leading 38.3 points while aiding Los Angeles in establishing itself as an early contender in the Western Conference.

Though defensive field goal percentage alone doesn’t paint a complete picture of a player’s defensive proficiency, Doncic’s current numbers begin to change the narrative that his effect is solely offensive. Maintaining his level of performance throughout the season will present a further challenge.

After years of scrutiny over his defense, Doncic is building a case that goes beyond mere rhetoric, making himself a tough obstacle for opponents aiming to score against him.
