Chicago Blackhawks Struggle Amidst National Coverage

4 hours ago 0

The Chicago Blackhawks faced harsh criticism on national television during their matchup against the Florida Panthers. The NHL on TNT crew, including co-host Paul Bissonette, voiced their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance. Bissonette commented during the first intermission, stating that he saw a lack of identity and called the team ‘soft’. The Blackhawks’ 4-11-1 record supports this criticism, as they continue their winless streak on the road with a 5-3 loss.

The game against Florida marked another challenge for the Blackhawks, who now stand 0-6-1 in away games for the 2026-27 season, remaining the sole winless road team in the NHL. Connor Bedard expressed the team’s disappointment, acknowledging their struggles and the need to improve in a highly competitive league.

The matchup was another reminder of their challenges this season. Despite a previously competitive 3-2 loss to the Panthers at United Center, this game saw the Panthers exploiting the Hawks’ mistakes early. Coach Jeff Blashill noted that the team’s performance after conceding an early goal was subpar.

Florida’s Sandis Vilmanis initiated scoring with a goal from a breakaway, capitalizing on a turnover in the neutral zone. This was followed by Carter Verhaeghe scoring a power-play goal for a 2-0 lead. Blashill commented on the turnover leading to Florida’s first goal, recognizing the need for the players to regain confidence under challenging circumstances.

As the game progressed, the Hawks showed some improvement in the second period, though still trailing. Seth Jones scored against his former team, widening Florida’s lead. Roman Kantserov managed to open the scoring for Chicago, assisted by Connor Bedard, which extended both players’ point streaks.

Despite Bedard attempting to match the physicality of the Panthers, the rest of the team did not follow, as reflected by the imbalance in hits. Bedard’s effort was acknowledged by Blashill, but he stressed the need for all players to compete at the same level.

In the third period, Frank Nazar led a short-lived surge for the Blackhawks, scoring two goals. However, an empty-net goal by Sam Reinhart secured the win for Florida at 5-3. The performance of Reinhart and Vilmanis was notable, with each contributing multiple points.

Reflecting on the game and the current season, Blashill conveyed the importance of eliminating mistakes that undermine their play. He remains hopeful that, by learning from these errors, the team can improve gradually.
