Rescuers Respond to Avalanches in Italy Amid Safety Concerns

1 month ago 0

In an unprecedented disaster in Italy’s mountainous regions, rescuers reported that over the past week, at least a dozen skiers, climbers, and hikers lost their lives. The Associated Press, however, noted a total of 13 fatalities. This tragic series of avalanches coincides with the start of the Winter Olympics in the area last Friday.

Authorities emphasized the safety and meticulous maintenance of the Olympic sites, which are under close surveillance. These sites include locations in Lombardy near the Swiss border, Cortina d’Ampezzo in Veneto, and Val di Fiemme in Trentino.

The Italian specialist mountain rescue organization identified fragile layers of fresh snow as the main cause of these deadly avalanches. These conditions are so unstable that even a single individual could set off a slide.

The main issue arises from “persistent weak layers in the snowy coating, often masked by fresh snow or wind, making detachments unpredictable and easily triggered even by the passing of a single skier or alpinist,” according to the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps.

Despite these inherent dangers, Federico Catania, a spokesperson for Italy’s Alpine Rescue Corps, mentioned that fresh snow from recent storms has attracted more visitors eager to ski. Consequently, incidents have risen in proportion to the number of people venturing into these precarious areas.

The country’s national fire and rescue team, Vigili del Fuoco, reported multiple avalanches over the weekend. Notably, two fatalities and one serious injury occurred in Alpe Meriggio in Valtellina due to an avalanche. Other reports indicate three fatalities in Trentino and one in South Tyrol.

A further string of deaths was reported near the Marmolada glacier and along the Apennine range, where two hikers and an ice climber perished in separate incidents.

Despite these tragic occurrences, Catania assured that individuals skiing in managed resort areas are not in significant danger. He confirmed that there are no risks associated with the Olympic venues as these are carefully monitored to maintain safety standards.

In preparation for the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Vigili del Fuoco has devised an enhanced rescue operation to guarantee the security of athletes, officials, spectators, and locals, while concurrently maintaining regular service.
