British authorities are currently evaluating claims that former Prince Andrew allegedly disclosed confidential documents to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. On Wednesday, Thames Valley Police updated the public on their ongoing examination of these allegations.
Leading the Investigation
Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright stated that Thames Valley Police spearhead the comprehensive assessment regarding possible misconduct in public office. This investigation involves assessing documents known as the ‘Epstein Files,’ maintained by the United States Department of Justice.
Wright confirmed that discussions have occurred with Specialist Crown Prosecutors from the Crown Prosecution Service, the body responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in the United Kingdom. “During this assessment phase, we evaluate information to determine if there is suspicion of a criminal offence and whether a full investigation is needed,” he stated.
Broader Context and Reactions
Recently, the U.S. Justice Department released numerous documents relating to Epstein, which has intensified scrutiny of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, as the former Prince is now known, following his loss of titles last year. NBC News sought comments from Mountbatten-Windsor’s team about these recent developments.
In response to the ongoing situation, Buckingham Palace has clarified King Charles III’s stance. A spokesperson affirmed that King Charles III, Andrew’s elder brother, would be “ready to support” the police if approached. Moreover, the spokesperson highlighted King Charles’s “profound concern at allegations which continue to emerge about Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s conduct.” The Palace also emphasized that royal sympathies remain with victims of abuse.
“Their Majesties’ thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse,”
reiterated the Palace.
Prince William and the Princess of Wales, Kate, have expressed their worry regarding the ongoing revelations. A Kensington Palace spokesperson stated that their focus remains on the victims, emphasizing the immense concern caused by these accusations.
Email Exchanges and Trade Envoy Duties
The controversy centers around emails from November 30, 2010, when Andrew served as a trade envoy for the U.K. These emails, observed by NBC News, potentially indicate Mountbatten-Windsor providing Epstein with reports from his Southeast Asia visits and information on investment possibilities in Afghanistan.
Trade envoys, under confidentiality rules, generally avoid sharing sensitive or commercial information. Andrew served as the U.K.’s special representative for international trade and investment from 2001 to 2011.
The U.K. Department for Business and Trade conveyed readiness to assist police in their evaluation of these claims.
Background on Prince Andrew’s Ties with Epstein
Former Prince Andrew’s links with Epstein have sparked controversy for numerous years. Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a significant voice among Epstein’s abuse survivors, accused Epstein of trafficking her to influential individuals, including Andrew. In 2021, she filed a lawsuit against the former prince alleging sexual abuse when she was 17.
Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied all accusations of misconduct related to Epstein. In 2022, he reached an undisclosed settlement with Giuffre. As the investigations continue, the full impact of these allegations remains to be seen.
