Welcome to the Late Night Roundup, where we recap last night’s comedy highlights. Get your fill of laughs without losing sleep. Here’s what happened.
Playing Nice
On Wednesday, ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ opened with a note for viewers. Jimmy Kimmel announced a break from airing on Thursday. He stated that this was out of respect for Stephen Colbert and the team at ‘The Late Show’, which airs its final episode on CBS. Kimmel emphasized the camaraderie between the shows. ‘Everyone at that show has always been very gracious to us,’ he noted. They never felt like rivals, he added, unlike the competition in late night’s past.
‘I think you know how I feel about the fact that they’re being pushed out. I hope the people who did the pushing feel ashamed of themselves tonight, although I know they probably won’t.’ — JIMMY KIMMEL
‘I will be watching tomorrow night. I hope that those of you who watch also will also tune in to CBS for the last time. Don’t ever watch it again.’ — JIMMY KIMMEL
Jokes on Raúl Castro
The late-night hosts took shots at the news of Raúl Castro’s indictment by the Trump administration. At 94 years old, the idea of sending him to jail was ripe for humor.
- Ronny Chieng questioned imprisoning a nonagenarian: ‘We’re going to send a 94-year-old man to jail? What’s the point? Everywhere that guy sits is death row.’
- Kimmel had his take: ‘What are we going to do with a 94-year-old prisoner? That guy won’t make it to the end of his next cigar.’
- Chieng joked about the age of the charges: ‘The charges are from 1996. He was only, what, 64 at the time? I mean, we all do crazy [expletive] when we’re young.’
