Representative Thomas Massie, known for his opposition to President Trump, is facing a challenge from Ed Gallrein, a contender supported by Trump. Gallrein’s victory would indicate Trump’s influence over the Republican Party.
In Burlington, Kentucky, near the Boone County Courthouse, Massie prepared to engage with the public a week before voters decide on his political future. During the event, a young boy offered Massie a Pez candy. Massie humorously noted Trump’s frequent endorsements, claiming none had come his way due to his political disagreements with the President.
Massie’s opposition to Trump includes voting against the president’s tax policy for its perceived lack of frugality, opposing the ongoing conflict in Iran, and criticizing aid to Israel, which he views as fiscally irresponsible. Furthermore, Massie played a key role in advocating for the release of the Epstein files, despite Trump’s resistance.
President Trump has expressed his intent to replace Massie, often labeling him negatively, such as calling him a “moron” and “total disaster.” Trump endorsed Gallrein, a dairy farmer and former Navy SEAL captain, aiming to bring in someone who aligns more closely with his policies.
Massie, who has enjoyed unchallenged success since his initial election in 2012, now finds himself in a competitive race. According to Massie’s campaign, internal polling shows a tie, whereas public surveys suggest Gallrein is leading.
