A 38-year-old man died following a shark attack at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island on Australia’s western coast. The attack occurred just before 10 a.m., and police confirmed the incident. Rottnest Island lies about 19 miles west of Perth.
Authorities reported that the man was taken back to shore but did not regain consciousness. A spokesperson from St. John WA Ambulance stated, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark.” The man was transported to shore by vessel and was met by paramedics. Unfortunately, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
According to reports, a great white shark was responsible for the attack. The site, Rottnest Island, is a popular tourist destination. The tragedy marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year.
Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged the public to exercise additional caution in the area after this incident. A video aired by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation showcased police and rescue officers at the scene.
Earlier this year, in January, a 12-year-old boy died a week after suffering a shark attack in Sydney Harbor. In the same timeframe, three others experienced non-fatal shark attacks along the New South Wales coast.
