Trump’s Cost Claims for Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Revamp Questioned

4 weeks ago 0

In April, former President Donald Trump announced a project to renew the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, budgeting it at $1.5 million. He criticized past administrations for their attempts to repair the site, saying they spent ‘hundreds of millions of dollars.’ During a Cabinet meeting, he suggested this figure was minimal compared to what previous Presidents Obama and Biden had used to fix it.

However, federal spending records dispute Trump’s cost estimate. The Obama administration did conduct a major renovation of the pool, which cost about $34 million, significantly lower than Trump’s claim. This two-year project, completed in 2012, addressed issues like stagnant water and leaks, implementing a new circulation and filtration system sourced from river water rather than city drinking water. The pool was also made shallower to conserve water, and its bottom received a gray tint for better reflection. Additional changes included paved paths.

No significant work took place during the Biden administration to further repair the pool. Chuck Sams, former director of the National Park Service, stated that a ‘full rehabilitation’ did not proceed due to an estimate exceeding $100 million. The pool was cleaned annually to control algae growth during Biden’s tenure. Federal contracts indicate at least $14.8 million has already been spent on Trump’s project, contrary to his initial cost claims.

Announcing the renovations, an email from White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers suggested Trump’s efforts would restore the pool more economically than past presidents. Trump mentioned improvements including a new ‘industrial grade pool’ surface colored in ‘American flag blue,’ intended to fix leaking issues with the old granite. Plans to replace the granite were scrapped due to a projected cost of $301 million. Trump detailed additional cleaning steps such as sandblasting and a new rubber sealant applied to prevent leaks.

Interior Department spokeswoman Katie Martin noted that the project’s costs reflected the need to expedite the leak prevention measures with increased resources in anticipation of America’s 250th celebrations.

An Associated Press report contributed to this analysis.
