A fire caused by an ammonia gas leak inside a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights has led to significant health warnings due to air quality issues.
Shelter-in-Place Orders
A shelter-in-place order is impacting the area south of the 101 Freeway to Washington Boulevard, and east of Soto Street to Indiana Street. Residents in these regions should:
- Close all windows and doors.
- Turn off air conditioning and heating systems.
- Bring everyone and pets to an enclosed room.
- Seal vents.
Smoke Advisory
A smoke advisory is in effect for much of East Los Angeles. The public is advised to limit outdoor activities, especially exercise. Those with health concerns should stay indoors. L.A. County recommends caution in areas like Montebello and Monterey Park. Residents sensitive to health issues should remain indoors, close all doors and windows, and reduce outside exposure. For emergencies, residents are urged to call 911.
The National Weather Service predicts southwest winds at 6-12 mph will continue into the evening.
