Andrew Ridgeley Reflects on George Michael’s Dual Life

George Michael, known for his powerful vocals and hits, struggled with the attention fame brought him, according to his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley. In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Ridgeley described Michael’s uneasy relationship with fame ahead of the documentary release, ‘WHAM! 10 Days In China’. Ridgeley referred to this as an ‘eternal conflict.’

‘He didn’t want to be a star… in the sense of constantly projecting himself,’ Ridgeley shared. ‘George Michael was a character he created to fulfill his artistic destiny.’

Michael, who was affectionately called ‘Yog’ by friends, wanted to live a life beyond his stage persona. This internal struggle was a constant presence for him, said Ridgeley.

Michael’s private life often escaped public understanding, Ridgeley noted. He explained that while many fans admired Michael, they did not fully grasp the depth of his talent until much later.

The documentary, ‘WHAM! 10 Days In China’, highlights the duo’s historic 1985 performances in Beijing and Guangzhou. This marked the first time a Western pop group performed in China. The film uses restored footage and interviews to showcase this pivotal cultural moment decades later.

Reflecting on the trip, Ridgeley expressed that uncovering the visit’s legacy was crucial. Although Michael criticized their first performance in China, Ridgeley understood his friend’s candid response.

‘That wouldn’t have been the first time he described a show as effing horrible,’ Ridgeley said humorously.

Michael passed away on Christmas Day 2016 at 53. Ridgeley believes fans’ ongoing admiration for Michael would have deeply moved him. He felt Michael would have been touched by the honor and recognition given to his talent and memory.

‘WHAM! 10 Days In China’ will be shown in theaters for a single day on July 28.
