Kristen Cruz lunged to her left, aiming to hit the ball to an open spot on the sand at Oak Street Beach. After a lengthy and gripping rally at the AVP Women’s League Championship, she needed a breather. Her shot landed perfectly, pushing the Austin Aces ahead 12-11 in the second set. This ignited excitement among the crowd. Cruz shared her thoughts about the play’s spontaneity and impact. She remarked, “With both players at the net and me at the line, I aimed for the open sand, and thankfully, it landed.” Her partner, Taryn Brasher, praised her decision-making and skill.
The Aces secured the title in straight sets against the Palm Beach Passion, winning four of the final points consecutively. Despite holding the best record, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson faced a second consecutive championship loss. They previously won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics in beach volleyball.
In men’s gameplay, Phil Dalhausser captivated the audience with a stellar performance. He and Trevor Crabb claimed victory for the Palm Beach Passion men’s team. Despite a previous calf injury, Dalhausser delivered six blocks in the championship match, showcasing the talent that earned him the 2008 Olympic gold. In a reflective statement, Dalhausser acknowledged the necessity of playing with discomfort in his career. He credited Crabb’s service placement for setting up his successful blocks.
Earlier, Dalhausser and Crabb faced a tense semifinal against the San Diego Smash. Dalhausser’s notable 7-point streak in a 9-0 run propelled them to a 15-11 first-set win. Crabb noted the slow start but highlighted Dalhausser’s serves and blocks as key to their comeback. The pair eventually won 19-17 in the second set.
The Aces reached the women’s final by defeating the Miami Mayhem in straight sets. Rallying from an early 3-0 deficit, they secured the first set 15-8 and clinched the next set 15-9. Cruz’s focus remained on taking it point by point and controlling their side of the net.
