After years of supremacy by the SEC, the Big Ten Conference proved its might in the 2025-2026 season. The Indiana Hoosiers achieved a flawless 16-0 season, securing the National Championship. They triumphed over Ohio State in the conference championship, overpowered Alabama in the Rose Bowl, and defeated Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

This marked a significant achievement for the Big Ten with consecutive championship wins. The Michigan Wolverines claimed victory in 2024, followed by the Buckeyes, who overcame Notre Dame to capture the title in 2025. While the SEC may have stronger overall depth, the top of the Big Ten competes effectively with any team.

Potential Rise of Oregon Ducks

Indiana’s head coach, Curt Cignetti, led the Hoosiers to triumph against the Miami Hurricanes in the National Championship at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. However, focus shifts to potential contenders like the Oregon Ducks.

A team’s strength often hinges on returning production from the previous season. This continuity benefits development and cohesion. Remarkably, Big Ten teams like Maryland, Nebraska, Minnesota, and UCLA excel in this area, ranking in the top 10 nationally for returning value.

Among these, Oregon ranks 12th with significant returning production. Last season, they lost only twice, both to Indiana, and showcased strong performances, including victories against USC, Iowa, Washington, and Texas Tech. With 66% of their production intact, led by quarterback Dante Moore, they are poised for success.

USC trails closely at 65% but lacks the same impact as Oregon. According to Bill Connelly’s SP+ projections, Oregon ranks as the No. 2 team in the country, showcasing efficiency in all facets of the game.

Challenges for Other Teams

Other Big Ten schools face varied prospects. USC emerges as a wildcard, ranking 13th in SP+ projections. Their offense excels, but defensive and special teams require attention to surpass their eight-game win projection.

Ohio State and Indiana, recent champions, encounter challenges despite commendable roster depth. Ohio State retains 60% of their production, and Indiana 56%, with both teams ranking among the top five nationally.

Ohio State secures the top spot, driven by elite recruiting and returning talents like Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith. Yet, Oregon might upset the standings, provided they navigate a challenging schedule.

Oregon’s schedule includes encounters against USC, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, and rivals Washington. Navigating this path is demanding, but the Ducks, under Coach Dan Lanning’s leadership, may re-enter the championship conversation.
