Chicago Bears fans experienced a moment of anxiety on Sunday when star quarterback Caleb Williams suffered an injury late in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings.
With the Bears trailing 6-3 and pushing for a crucial score deep in Vikings territory, Williams rolled to his left to evade Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, who lunged for his right leg. Williams managed to dodge the tackle, but his hamstring gave way, causing him to fall.
The incident was classified as a non-contact injury. Observing the significant pain Williams appeared to endure, many feared a severe injury like an Achilles tear. However, early reports following the game provided some relief, suggesting a shorter recovery period might be likely. Confirmation awaited the MRI results due on Monday.
On Monday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero confirmed through tests that Williams had escaped serious damage to his hamstring. The Bears are not ruling out his participation in Week 3 against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football,” scheduled for exactly one week later.
This news comes as a major relief for Chicago. The sight of Williams in discomfort, being carted off, was distressing for fans and the team. Williams has been considered one of the most promising young quarterbacks, further emphasized by his exceptional performances.
In the Bears’ season opener against the Panthers, Williams showcased his skills in a 59-37 victory in Carolina. Completing 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns, he also added 65 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. Even during the game against the Vikings, in challenging weather conditions, Williams demonstrated his talent, completing 16 of 26 passes for 138 yards, one interception, and 42 rushing yards.
Although Williams might not play against Philadelphia, the possibility he could miss only one game is significant. Following the match against the Eagles, the Bears will face the Jets at home, before away games against the Packers and Falcons.
