The audience at a California gubernatorial debate reacted audibly when Republican candidate Chad Bianco suggested Democratic candidate Katie Porter follow his advice on parenting during a heated exchange regarding state sanctuary policies for illegal immigrants. The debate took place on a Wednesday as part of NBC LA and Telemundo 52’s coverage, a few weeks before California’s jungle primary scheduled for June 2, 2026.
Porter and Bianco were among seven candidates participating in the debate. The confrontation began after Porter was asked to provide her opinion on the state’s sanctuary policies for illegal immigrants. Porter emphasized the importance of enforcing existing laws, suggesting that without enforcement, there could be instances where individuals act independently, or “crazy cowboys” might attempt to take law enforcement into their own hands.
Bianco interrupted, stating, “tell that to a crazy mother who lost her child,” prompting a clash between the two candidates. Porter rejected the notion, stating, “I don’t need any lectures from you about being a mother,” to which Bianco responded, “You might,” causing the audience to gasp in surprise.
The campaigns of both Porter and Bianco have been marked by controversy. Porter has faced scrutiny over a resurfaced video where she used expletives towards a staffer, in addition to details stemming from her divorce. Questions have arisen concerning her temperament as a leader following allegations from her ex-husband Matthew Hoffman, who accused her of verbal and physical abuse, including an incident involving the pouring of scalding-hot mashed potatoes on him.
Despite these allegations, Porter maintains shared custody of her three children with Hoffman. Although Porter’s former boyfriend, Julian Willis, once threatened to contact Child Protective Services, there is no evidence indicating Porter has ever lost custody of her children. These threats were part of an extensive exchange involving approximately a thousand texts received by Porter and her family over a three-month period. Porter obtained a temporary restraining order against Willis, citing verbal and physical abuse.
Fox News Digital sought a comment from Porter regarding the debate incident. Meanwhile, Bianco, a career law enforcement officer and the current sheriff, has faced scrutiny for his previous connection with the far-right Oath Keepers organization. He claims his brief membership concluded in 2014.
Fox News Digital also reached out to Bianco for further comment on these issues.
