On April 7, 2026, former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) appeared at a town hall meeting in Sacramento, California. Voters in California’s 14th Congressional District, which includes a part of Alameda County in the Bay Area, are set to decide the outcome of the special election runoff to replace Swalwell. He resigned from Congress in April following allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.
The seat is expected to stay within the Democratic Party. Both candidates who passed the initial round of voting in California’s top-two primary system are Democrats. In June’s first round, State Sen. Aisha Wahab (D) led with 42.8% of the vote, while former Dublin Mayor Melissa Hernandez (D) managed to gain 16.8%.
Aisha Wahab is seen as the progressive choice in this election. On the other hand, Melissa Hernandez is considered more moderate. The race has drawn financial attention from multiple groups. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and another super PAC opposing it have invested in this race. This involvement by AIPAC in Democratic contests has stirred debate this year.
Polling stations are scheduled to close at 11 p.m. EDT.
