On October 25, the New York Giants managed a 27-21 overtime victory over the Houston Texans, largely due to a strong performance by running back Cam Skattebo. After a game with no carries, Skattebo rushed 17 times for 124 yards and scored a touchdown. It marked his first 100-yard rushing game as a professional, as noted by ESPN.
However, his exceptional performance also came with controversy. Skattebo received an unnecessary roughness penalty for allegedly using the crown of his helmet against Texans safety M.J. Stewart during a long run. The Giants coach, John Harbaugh, had to physically restrain an irate Skattebo on the sideline and argued against the call himself. Skattebo kept his remarks to the game officials private but was vocal about his feelings towards the NFL’s response to his playing style.
“I will say, the NFL loves to post me when I do things like that, but then also wants to take stuff from me,” Skattebo expressed. “I’m going to run the ball how I want, and if I keep getting flagged or fined, I guess I’m going to play for free.”
OutKick highlighted that the replay resembled many of Skattebo’s previous runs, and he admitted a fine might be imminent. This standout performance came amid a trying time for Skattebo. He previously fumbled during an overtime period against the Washington Commanders, leading to a tie in that game, and then had a limited role with no carries in a loss to the New Orleans Saints.
In the game against Houston, Skattebo’s 42-yard run in overtime was pivotal, setting up Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown. Skattebo viewed the performance as a collective statement from the team’s backfield, especially following the release of fellow running back Najee Harris.
“It was awesome to show Coach and the team that we have running backs who can do the task,” he commented. Unfortunately, Skattebo experienced some hamstring issues after the long run. With the Giants holding a 4-2-1 record, they now enter a bye week before facing the Philadelphia Eagles, a crucial NFC East matchup.
