Charles Barkley Comments on WNBA’s Stance on Transgender Athletes

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley voiced a strong opinion on the WNBA’s policy regarding transgender athletes during an interview on CNN host Michael Smerconish’s podcast. Barkley stated that the WNBA should remain exclusively for women.

Barkley’s comments followed an incident involving former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom, who was removed from a WNBA game after a confrontation with Chicago Sky’s Natasha Cloud. Freedom had worn a t-shirt with the definition of a woman, sparking controversy.

Barkley criticized the leadership of both the NBA and the WNBA. He called out NBA commissioner Adam Silver and WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert for not addressing the issue earlier. Barkley remarked that biological men should not compete against biological women.

“I’m disappointed in Adam Silver and Cathy. They let this controversy grow without a clear stance. The WNBA is for women only,” Barkley emphasized. “If anyone disagrees, they should look elsewhere.”

Barkley highlighted the growing negative perception of the WNBA due to incidents like Freedom’s removal and backlash against players like Sophie Cunningham, who oppose biological males in female sports.

Director of Independent Women’s Law Center, May Mailman, expressed skepticism about Barkley’s influence on public opinion. She noted that despite Barkley’s statements, public responses remain unchanged, citing the difficulties faced by Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham, who has been vocal on the issue.

The WNBA became the center of attention again as Freedom and ex-NBA player Royce White announced their intentions to join the league. The WNBA’s current rules state eligibility is for women but lack a clear definition.
