Coco Gauff’s French Open Exit and Naomi Osaka’s Fashion Choices Highlight Dramatic Day in Paris

Anastasia Potapova put an end to Coco Gauff’s French Open title defense during the third round. Potapova won 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4, outpacing Gauff in the longer baseline rallies.

“Coco is such a champion. I respect her so much,” Potapova said. “I’m unbelievably proud of myself that I stayed there and fought until the last point.” The match occurred in front of mostly empty seats at Court Philippe-Chatrier as many fans chose to watch the Champions League soccer final instead.

Potapova, ranked 30th and now representing Austria, holds a 3-2 career record against Gauff. Her clay season has been strong with a final in Linz and semifinals in the Madrid Open.

Gauff, ranked fourth, had recently reached the Italian Open final. Despite hitting fewer double-faults and unforced errors compared to Potapova, Gauff was outlasted in longer rallies. She covered 2,309 meters during the match, compared to Potapova’s 2,090.

Elsewhere, Naomi Osaka defeated Iva Jovic 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4 in her 100th Grand Slam match. Her victory sets up a round-of-16 meeting with Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5.

“For me, it would be weirder to wear a normal tennis kit, almost, at this point,” Osaka said about her fashion choices. Her unique outfits require planning a year and a half in advance with numerous fittings throughout the year.

The tournament’s seventh day was hot and humid, reaching 34 degrees Celsius. A spectator needed medical attention during Osaka’s match due to apparent illness.

Further matches saw Diane Parry defeat Amanda Anisimova, while Diana Shnaider won against Oleksandra Oliynykova. In men’s play, Alejandro Tabilo beat Moise Kouame, and Matteo Berrettini took over five hours to defeat Francisco Comesana.

Backup safety measures were increased after Zeynep Sönmez tripped over advertising boards during a doubles match. Boards were moved behind line judges for better safety.
