Colorado Democrats censured Governor Jared Polis on Wednesday. The decision followed his commutation of Tina Peters’ prison sentence. Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk, was convicted in a voting system breach case.
The Colorado Democratic Party State Central Committee voted on the censure. The move came after Polis, a fellow Democrat, commuted Peters’ sentence. Peters was involved in a 2021 voting equipment breach.
Reducing her sentence now under pressure from Donald Trump is not justice. It sets a dangerous and disappointing precedent.
The party’s statement criticized Polis for his decision. They argued it undermines the consequences of election tampering.
Peters spoke at a rally in Denver on April 5, 2022. The event took place on the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol.
Democrats accused Polis of harming the party’s credibility. They barred him from future official Democratic Party events. According to the party, the clemency does not reflect their values.
A spokesperson defended Polis’ decision when contacted by Fox News Digital.
The Governor made this decision based on the facts of the case.
Polis had announced clemency for 44 individuals. This included 35 pardons and nine commutations. Peters’ sentence was reduced, making her eligible for parole by June 1, 2026.
Peters gained national attention among 2020 election skeptics. Her case sparked widespread debate.
Former President Trump supported the commutation on Truth Social.
The executive order reduced Peters’ sentence from over eight years to four years and several months. The clemency does not affect her criminal conviction.
Peters was convicted of multiple offenses in 2024. Charges included influencing a public servant and conspiracy to commit identity fraud.
Secretary of State Jena Griswold condemned the decision. She accused Polis of legitimizing the election denial movement.
