Congress Reacts to 9/11’s Legacy with Preventative Measures

1 hour ago 0

Andrew Garbarino, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, vividly recalls the moments during the September 11, 2001, attacks. At the time, he was a high school senior in Mr. Ponzi’s government class when the first plane hit the World Trade Center.

Garbarino described the initial confusion in the classroom regarding the extent of the attack. When the second plane hit, it became clear that it was not a simple accident. Now, 25 years later, he leads a congressional committee that oversees homeland security, urging Congress to take proactive measures against future threats.

“Being chairman and a New Yorker, preventing another 9/11 is my top priority,” Garbarino stated.

Garbarino has voiced concerns about congressional complacency regarding national security.

He emphasizes that Congress often reacts to crises rather than preventing them. He advocates for enacting laws beforehand to preempt potential threats.

Reflecting on 9/11, Garbarino highlighted how the lack of communication between intelligence agencies contributed to the tragedy. He expressed concern about repeating past complacencies.

Representing New York’s 2nd Congressional District, Garbarino serves a community that remains deeply affected by the events of 9/11. The district includes Long Island’s south shore, residents of which still feel the tragedy’s impact.

Garbarino mentioned that many continue to suffer from health issues linked to the attack, including first responders who bravely faced the twin towers’ collapse. According to him, more have died from related illnesses than on the actual day.

In response, legislation was signed earlier this year to address funding for the World Trade Center Health Program. This program aids survivors and responders with medical treatment.

Garbarino noted that nearly every congressional district in the U.S. has participants in the program, showing the tragedy’s widespread impact.

“The effects felt across the nation are also due to people helping after 9/11, moving back to their homes and later suffering from related illnesses,” he remarked.

The ongoing response to 9/11 highlights the importance of foresight and preparation in addressing national security threats. Garbarino’s leadership advocates for proactive measures to avert future disasters of similar magnitude.
