A teacher at Barrington High School in Rhode Island has faced renewed criticism after being honored in the school’s 2026 yearbook. The controversy follows comments the teacher made about the late Turning Point USA founder, Charlie Kirk.
Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. Following the event, Benjamin Fillo, a social studies teacher at Barrington High, posted a video online calling Kirk “garbage.” Fillo accused Kirk of harboring negative views toward the LGBTQ community and women’s rights. He also commented on Kirk’s manner of speaking before concluding, “What a piece of garbage. Look what happens … Bye, Charlie!”
An interim superintendent of Barrington Public Schools, Bob Mitchell, indicated that Fillo returned to teaching on December 1, potentially violating the district’s social media policy. This return occurred despite prior public outrage over his remarks.
The yearbook dedication reads in part: “Any student at BHS who has the opportunity to learn from you should consider themselves fortunate. If we’ve taken away anything from our time with you, it’s an understanding of what good can come from a life with you.”
The dedication was attributed to students Karthik and Nachi representing the Class of 2026. A school spokesperson clarified that the dedication was solely determined by the senior class.
Heather and Jarrod Ryan, parents of a Barrington High student, expressed disappointment in the teacher’s selection. They argued that it contradicted the values of integrity and respect encouraged within the school community.
Tyler Robinson, identified as a suspect in Kirk’s shooting, was last seen in a video appearance at an initial hearing on September 16, 2025.
Despite attempts to reach Fillo for comment, Fox News Digital did not receive a response. Rachel del Guidice reports for Fox News Digital, and tips can be sent to her email.
