The tennis world may have a new controversial figure in Corentin Moutet. Following his victory at the HSBC Championships on Monday, the French tennis player found himself in hot water after an on-court interview. During his chat with the reporter, Moutet repeatedly used explicit language, capturing the attention of fans and officials alike.
Although Moutet’s comments appeared to be made in jest, neither the ATP nor several others were amused. The ATP announced a $40,000 fine for Moutet due to the language used during the interview held after his first-round match at The Queen’s Club in London.
“Following the use of profane language by Corentin Moutet during his post-match interview, the player has received a fine of $40,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct,” stated the ATP communications office.
Despite the fine, Moutet has decided to appeal the decision. The appeal will undergo review by the ATP Tour Compliance Committee. The ATP has stated that no further comments will be available until the appeal process concludes.
Moutet, who faced Mackenzie McDonald at the Cincinnati Open on August 7, 2025, is clearly not backing down. His resolve is evident as he fights to avoid the financial repercussions of his actions. His run at the Queen’s Club ended after losing in straight sets to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, adding urgency to his financial situation. This loss means he will take home about $23,000, but the fine would offset any earnings.
On the subject of fines for bad language, the contrast with other sports is noteworthy. In a recent incident, a basketball player’s celebration also led to a fine after an F-bomb slipped during a live TV interview. These moments serve as reminders to athletes about the financial consequences of unsporting conduct.
While Moutet’s appeal is pending, this episode might encourage him to reconsider his on-court behavior. Avoiding such language in the future could prevent further fines, benefiting both his public image and his bank account.
