A couple engaged in renovating a 19th-century church in upstate New York has captured the imagination of millions after discovering something peculiar: two windows that belong to a seemingly non-existent room. Lauren Gunderman, 31, shared with Newsweek about her and her partner’s ambitious plan of transforming the 1872 church into an upscale wedding and event venue.
The renovation of The Stately on Main, formerly a Presbyterian church in Waterville, includes an intriguing quest for what seems to be a concealed space within the building. Documenting their journey, Gunderman and her partner have sparked broad interest online, drawing theories, warnings, and expert opinions as observers join them in solving the mystery.
In a noteworthy video on Instagram from May 25, shared by @127eastmain, the duo attempts to access what they have dubbed the “mystery room” within the church. The footage features the couple examining a potential entry in the ceiling, where wooden boards cover the suspected location of the hidden room. They begin dismantling the boards, hoping to reveal an entrance, with the video questioning how to access this elusive space.
The exploration began upon noticing two exterior windows that seemed unrelated to any visible room inside. Believing in the room’s existence, they embarked on a search for a way to enter. At one point, they uncovered a small opening below the estimated location of the room. This gap had been covered with boards, leading to optimism that they had found the entry.
However, after removing the boards and lowering a phone for a better look, they discovered only more structural elements, and no hidden room was found. A caption in a later video reflects on another attempt to access the room, humorously noting, “Why am I wearing pink slides with socks?” They explain trying to trace where the enigmatic windows fit inside the church, hoping the floor would divulge access; instead, they encountered additional flooring.
Though their efforts haven’t yet led to the room, external inputs might have cracked the case. After receiving many comments from organ experts, it appears that the windows may have been covered within the organ room after the introduction of electrical components. Gunderman admits uncertainty about disturbing the pipes, suggesting the mystery might remain unsolved.
The video swiftly captured attention, amassing more than 4.9 million views and over 137,000 likes. Viewers are actively engaged, sharing their thoughts on the hidden room. User Jk_its_me_scarlett humorously commented on potential dangers: “So you bought an old church with a boarded off room…. and your first thought was how do we get in there? That’s where the demon sleep.” Another user, Oscar.a.mejia, expressed skepticism about opening the boarded-up space, and Starcatcher1966 echoed similar sentiments regarding avoiding whatever might remain sealed inside.
