Cuban-American lawmakers issued a warning that Cuba’s worsening humanitarian and economic crisis is pushing the island towards unprecedented challenges. They emphasized the urgency for the Trump administration to apply more pressure on Havana to potentially change the future direction of the Western Hemisphere.
“We have never been this close to a change, with the regime possibly being ousted,” remarked Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., in an interview with Fox News. He conveyed his optimism and message to the Cuban citizens.
“There’s a lot of hope in Cuba right now,” Gimenez noted. “We have the right president, we have the right Secretary of State. You have three Cuban Americans and a small majority in the House of Representatives working for your cause, and we will never forget you. My message is… it’s gonna happen.”
Florida Reps. Carlos Gimenez, Maria Salazar, and Mario Diaz-Balart highlighted this perspective during an interview on Fox News’ “My View with Lara Trump.” They discussed ongoing blackouts, energy shortages, and rising unrest, framing Cuba not only as a humanitarian disaster but also as a growing national security threat located just 90 miles from the U.S. coast.
“We’re only 90 miles away from Miami, the city I represent, where Western values were taken 65 years ago,” Salazar commented. “President Trump, after 10 administrations, is bringing this possibility back to the Cubans.”
Diaz-Balart emphasized the national security risk posed by Cuba, noting that President Trump is aware and will act decisively. “The reason for our optimism is President Trump won’t allow a regime, located 90 miles away, with drones that can threaten the United States and that harbors fugitives from U.S. law,” he warned.
“Now, let’s remember that we are commemorating the murder of three Americans and one U.S. resident by the Cuban regime in cold blood,” Diaz-Balart stated. “Nobody acted on this until Donald Trump.”
Salazar supported Diaz-Balart’s stance, pointing to the administration’s focus on confronting hostile regimes in the Western Hemisphere. “Look at what he did with Maduro. It was a source of evil in the Western Hemisphere. The threat from Venezuela exists because Cuba exported its repression playbook,” Salazar argued. “Thankfully, this is ending soon.”
