The Tour de France concluded on Sunday, but not without a bizarre incident during its course. Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio experienced a freak accident during Stage 19 on Friday. As Rubio climbed Alpe d’Huez, riding behind a support vehicle seemed advantageous. It created a slipstream, allowing easier riding. However, this strategy backfired when the vehicle suddenly braked.
The vehicle, belonging to UAE Team Emirates-XRG, had to stop abruptly on a tight road crowded with spectators. A person fell in front of the car, forcing an emergency stop. A team representative shared, “A spectator fell directly into the car’s path. The car braked to avoid collision. It was unfortunate, and nobody wants such incidents. We wish Einer Rubio a quick recovery.”
Einer Rubio was 27th overall at the time. The crash left him needing 20 stitches. He spent an hour in medical care and was airlifted to a hospital for further examination. The incident raises questions on spectator proximity during races. Such closeness doesn’t aid the race and can lead to accidents. Enhancing safety remains crucial in racing event management.
