Democratic Divide Over Hasan Piker’s Comments on U.S. Jews and Israel

Rep. Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey has voiced concern over comments by Hasan Piker, a popular left-wing Twitch streamer. Piker’s remarks on U.S. Jews’ support for Israel have stirred controversy within the Democratic Party. Several Democrats condemned his statements, citing them as antisemitic and warning of potential violence.

In response to criticism, Piker pointed fingers at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), openly accusing them of instigating the backlash. He posted on X, stating, “AIPAC boss call was made. they are unanimous in their hatred of me, and i welcome their hatred.” He further suggested calculating financial ties between AIPAC and Democrats who criticized him.

Brian Romick, President & CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, responded to Piker’s claims. He labeled them as baseless conspiracy theories, intended to avoid accountability for his remarks. Democrats have distanced themselves from Piker, stressing that candidates should not associate with his rhetoric.

During one of his streams, Piker addressed his audience, stating, “If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews.” This statement triggered further condemnation from Democratic figures.

Sen. Jacky Rosen from Nevada described his comments as a “new low.” She accused Piker of excusing antisemitic violence by blaming Jewish Americans for the attacks. “Crimes against Jews for being Jews is antisemitism plain and simple,” Rosen affirmed.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democrats have made strong declarations against Piker’s statements. Jeffries described them as dangerous and antisemitic, emphasizing the importance of fighting antisemitism. He stated, “We will fight the cancer of antisemitism with the fierce urgency of now.”

Ken Martin, Chair of the Democratic National Committee, differentiated between valid criticism of Israeli government policies and Piker’s harmful rhetoric. He labeled the latter as wrong and antisemitic.

Within Democratic circles, Piker remains a hot topic. While some candidates have associated with him, others have distanced themselves due to his controversial views. Notably, Abdul El-Sayed, a Michigan Democratic Senate nominee, had appeared with Piker previously but has since distanced himself from Piker’s remarks. El-Sayed reaffirmed his commitment to Jewish safety, emphasizing the need to combat antisemitism.

Piker continues to defend his stance, viewing Democratic criticism as orchestrated by AIPAC. Attempts to reach AIPAC for comments on Piker’s accusations have yet to garner a response.
