Democrats Challenge Republican Incumbents with Low-Cost Campaigns

1 day ago 0

Democrat Victoria Broderick leads Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais by 280 votes in Tennessee’s unofficial final results. Broderick’s lead, if it holds, may end DesJarlais’ 16-year congressional career. In 2010, DesJarlais first won his seat. He was seeking a ninth term in a district former President Donald Trump won by 24 points in 2024.

According to available Federal Election Commission (FEC) data, DesJarlais’ campaign spent $508,166 by October 14, compared to Broderick’s $90,062. DesJarlais raised $667,181 while Broderick raised $94,217. Despite these financial gaps, DesJarlais now trails in this traditionally Republican district.

Redistricting efforts backfire on Republicans amid historic House losses.

Broderick’s narrow lead in Tennessee’s 4th Congressional District follows her low-cost campaign, focused on grassroots organizing. She did not invest in paid television advertising, instead relying on a years-long grassroots effort.

Axios reported similar trends in North Carolina. High Point Mayor Cyril Jefferson leads Republican Rep. Addison McDowell, 51.1% to 48.9%. Jefferson’s campaign, like Broderick’s, lacked significant advertising spending.

Meanwhile, McDowell previously won his district by 38.3 points in 2024. Jefferson attributed his success to volunteer engagement.

Political science professor John Dinan from Wake Forest University noted the unusual nature of these races, explaining that typically, challengers in Republican-dominant districts need substantial television advertising and funding.

These campaigns illustrate how strong grassroots organizing and skilled local candidates can challenge traditional strongholds, even with fewer financial resources.

Editor’s Note: The Associated Press has not called either race as of now.
