Des Bishop’s Journey in Comedy: From Ireland to the U.S.

Des Bishop, a New York City native, has carved an unconventional path in the comedy world. His career stretches from Queens to Ireland and even to China. After returning to the U.S. in his mid-40s during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bishop found touring the States improved his comedy skills significantly.

From Ireland to America

Bishop moved to Ireland at the age of 14, not returning to live in the U.S. until the pandemic. In Ireland, he polished his storytelling abilities. Performing in multiple languages and styles, he crafted a unique comedic voice.

His latest stand-up special, “Bridge and Tunnel,” filmed at the Comedy Cellar in Manhattan, debuted on Hulu and will be available for free on YouTube on July 10. This is his seventh special but only the second to premiere in America. Bishop observes that American audiences needed a different style from what he performed in Ireland.

“In America, touring improved my skills. While Ireland honed my storytelling, American clubs taught pace and punch,” Bishop said.

Performing across America forced him to adapt his longer narratives from Ireland to fit the quicker-paced style appreciated stateside. This shift enhanced his performance skill set.

Embracing His Roots

Initially seen as an ‘American in Ireland,’ Bishop realized his identity as a ‘guy from Queens’ could fuel fresh material. By embracing his roots, his comedy evolved. His new special pays homage to Gen X nostalgia, though he acknowledges younger audiences might not connect with all references.

Addressing potential criticism of nostalgia-based comedy, Bishop acknowledges its value. He notes even young audiences will, in time, experience nostalgia for their own pasts.

A Collaborative Partnership

Bishop collaborates with his wife, Hannah Berner, also a comedian. They navigate their careers respectfully, aiding each other’s endeavors. Bishop helps Berner with her jokes, while she guides him in social media strategies.

Berner’s pragmatic approach to content virality complements Bishop’s work. He credits her with helping highlight material that gains traction online.

The couple’s relationship flourished despite scrutiny from Berner’s role on Bravo’s “Summer House.” Bishop reflects that letting go of past anxieties is an important lesson for both life and comedy.
