Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Controversy During Concert

Ed Sheeran took to the stage in Philadelphia, addressing recent controversies surrounding his tour and the situation in Gaza. The artist expressed his desire for his music and performances to focus on unity and humanity rather than politics.

Sheeran shared his views on the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel, describing them as horrific. He commented on the situation in Gaza, calling it catastrophic and unjustifiable. Despite not wanting to be an activist musician, he recognized the complex political issues and the debate surrounding freedom of speech.

“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” Sheeran said during the concert.

The remarks come after a turbulent week during Sheeran’s tour. Rapper Macklemore, originally set to open for Sheeran in the U.S., was removed after expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments at a September 5 show. Sheeran stated he wasn’t responsible for Macklemore’s removal, which was influenced by Robert Kraft, owner of New England Patriots.

Many supporting acts of Sheeran withdrew after the incident. Macklemore’s replacement, Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, backed out, as did Finneas, set to tour with Sheeran in South America.

Outside the Philadelphia stadium, a few pro-Palestinian protesters gathered. Hillary Steinberg, a former Sheeran fan, expressed disappointment over his neutrality.

“I think all art is political, and all music is political, and so this choice — even though he was saying that he wasn’t complicit — is a political choice,” Steinberg said.

Conversely, Diane Savitz from Pennsylvania, an attendee, supported Sheeran’s stance, arguing that concerts are meant to unite people.

“A concert should be for people enjoying the music. Music should bring people together,” Savitz said. “Everyone has their right to freedom of speech, but not every platform is the place for it.”

Macklemore pledged a $1 million donation for Palestinian relief and challenged Kraft to match it. The billionaire along with Sheeran agreed to donate $2 million, although details remain unspecified.

Pollstar noted Sheeran’s Loop Tour as the highest-grossing worldwide, averaging over $7 million per city in box office revenue. Despite controversies, Sheeran remains among the top-earning concert acts.

Addressing the crowd, Sheeran reaffirmed his commitment to his fans and touring crew. He advocated for open opinions at his concerts, promoting themes of love, hope, and unity.

“This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world,” Sheeran emphasized about venues’ influence in restricting performances.
