The Detroit Pistons have emerged in the NBA trade rumors surrounding Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. Previously, they were the top contender in the Eastern Conference under their star player, Cade Cunningham. Despite their efforts, they failed to progress past the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the NBA Playoffs. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks claimed this year’s championship.
According to Marc Stein’s Substack, the Pistons are a team to monitor as a potential facilitator for a significant three-team trade involving Giannis. This proposed deal includes the Miami Heat, who have been in Giannis trade discussions for weeks. The trade scenario would bring Tyler Herro to the Pistons and send Giannis to Miami. However, specific details on what the Pistons would offer the Bucks or the Heat in the deal remain unknown.
The Miami Heat narrowly missed the postseason after falling to the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Play-In Tournament. During that game, Miami star Bam Adebayo suffered an injury in the first half following a controversial play by LaMelo Ball.
Should the trade materialize, the Pistons would gain notable benefits. They heavily relied on Cunningham’s leadership during games, especially in the playoffs. Adding Herro would introduce another scoring option and an outside shooting threat. With All-Star Jalen Duren effective in the paint, new opportunities could arise.
This last season, Herro ranked as Miami’s second-leading scorer, trailing only Norman Powell. He averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game but played in just 33 games due to injury. Recently, Five Reasons Sports reported Herro underwent a minor foot procedure. The outlet mentioned this procedure is not expected to impact his offseason activities or training camp attendance.
The anticipation for Giannis’s trade has been a long-standing topic. Discussions about moving him from Milwaukee began even before last season’s trade deadline. Giannis stayed with the Bucks, yet the team appears to embark on a serious rebuilding phase.
