The Department of Homeland Security is relaxing travel restrictions for Iran’s national soccer team before their final World Cup group-stage match against Egypt in Seattle. The previous logistical rules have been reversed, allowing ‘Team Melli’ to enter the U.S. from their base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, two days before the match taking place on Friday, June 26. This change provides the team an extra day of preparation compared to prior games.
Although the team is required to leave the U.S. immediately after the match, the DHS spokesperson highlighted that this decision focuses on ensuring pitch safety amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions and visa refusals for key team personnel.
The abrupt change adds to the growing logistical challenges faced by the Iranian squad. They have dealt with multiple visa denials, strict border curfews, and sudden security alterations since their arrival at the Mexico training camp.
