Ebola Outbreak in Congo: Challenges and Recoveries

3 weeks ago 0

The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported at least 282 confirmed Ebola cases during its ongoing outbreak, the Ministry of Health announced late Sunday. The outbreak is concentrated in the eastern Ituri province, with 264 cases recorded there. Over 1,000 suspected cases with the Bundibugyo virus, a species of Ebola without approved treatment or vaccine, have been reported.

The Ministry identified key challenges in containing the outbreak: early detection and isolation of cases, comprehensive contact tracing, safe burials, and improving infection control in health facilities. Current contact tracing covers 45% of cases, with 220 suspected cases under investigation.

Several patients who recovered spoke of their relief. Baraka Bulambulu, a nurse whose last two Ebola tests returned negative, expressed his joy during an interview. Bulambulu was among those given recovery certificates by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who opened a new treatment center in Bunia, Ituri’s capital.

Ezo Étienne, another recovering nurse, described experiencing dizziness and hypotension before testing positive. Both he and Bulambulu are part of a group of five survivors, all health workers, who were notably affected during the outbreak.

Neighboring Uganda has reported nine Ebola cases and closed its border to minimize spread. Previous outbreaks in the region have been hampered by lack of approved treatments, remote locations, and armed conflicts. Despite these challenges, recoveries send a positive message about early care.

Dr. Dieudonne Mwamba Kazadi, Director-General of Congo’s National Institute of Public Health, highlighted the significance of recoveries. “It is possible to recover from Ebola when seeking early care in dedicated health facilities,” he stated.
