The England men’s national soccer team has landed in West Palm Beach this week to gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Amidst preparations, adapting to Florida’s heat becomes a key factor, as similar weather conditions are expected in many of the 16 U.S host cities.
“England players are set to use high-tech palm-cooling devices in the United States to help combat heat during the World Cup,” BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel stated. “Research indicates that cooling palms can significantly reduce core body temperature, proving essential for recovery and performance,” Mokbel mentioned. “These devices will be utilized in training and during the planned hydration breaks in World Cup matches.”
NPR reports that 67 out of the 104 matches are scheduled in conditions that pose potential risks for heat illnesses, with 39 of those matches being classified as high risk.
England’s World Cup journey will commence against Croatia on June 17 at AT&T Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys. Although the temperature in Arlington, Texas, is expected to peak at 90 degrees with a “realfeel” of 97 degrees on that day, the stadium’s roof is anticipated to mitigate any issues.
Subsequent matches in Group L involve facing Ghana at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on June 23, and playing against Panama at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on June 27.
Having reached the quarterfinals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the team’s aim is to, at minimum, replicate or surpass that performance in the upcoming month. England possesses the third-best odds of clinching its first World Cup victory since 1966.
