Actor Shia LaBeouf has received a probation sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting three individuals outside a bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. He will participate in an alcohol treatment program, as ordered by an Orleans Parish judge, per his attorney Sarah Chervinsky.
LaBeouf, known for his roles in “Transformers” and “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,” was previously released on bail after his February arrest near the French Quarter. Footage from the incident shows him pushing a person to the ground and hitting another in the face, which may have resulted in a dislocated nose according to police reports. Homophobic slurs were reportedly used by LaBeouf even during his arrest.
LaBeouf faced three counts of simple battery and a six-month suspended sentence alongside two years of probation. Judge Juana Marine-Lombard ruled that LaBeouf must avoid contact with the victims and distance himself from the bar involved. Attorney Chervinsky emphasized LaBeouf’s intent to “take accountability” for his actions, describing the event as a minor bar confrontation unrelated to bias or prejudice.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams confirmed that the victims were consulted before LaBeouf’s plea deal. Jeffrey Damnit, identified by police as Jeffrey Klein, claims he was one of LaBeouf’s victims and experienced threats accompanied by homophobic slurs during the altercation. Damnit’s lawyer expressed hope for LaBeouf’s behavioral improvement post-treatment.
Despite the charges, LaBeouf dismissed the notion of a “drinking problem” in a candid interview with Andrew Callaghan, attributing his behavior more to anger and ego. Furthermore, LaBeouf made controversial statements regarding his fear of “big gay people,” which he claimed is rooted in personal experiences.
LaBeouf has a history of legal issues ranging from his arrest in New York City on suspicion of assault during a livestream to charges of public drunkenness in Georgia. Also of note is a lawsuit from singer FKA Twigs accusing him of abuse during their relationship, settled in July. LaBeouf rose to prominence as a child actor on “Even Stevens.”
