Enhancing the Electric Grid on a Budget

52 minutes ago 0

Researchers are exploring advanced transmission technologies as a solution to improve the current electric grid. Some technology companies express concerns, however. They worry about convincing utilities to adopt new methods due to their profit models.

The climate crisis necessitates a rapid transition to green energy. Yet, many wind and solar projects face waits of several years to connect to transmission lines. To meet carbon reduction targets, the U.S. must increase transmission capacity by 43% by 2035, based on findings from Princeton University’s REPEAT Project. Building new transmission infrastructure presents challenges due to time constraints and financial demands.

To address these challenges, some technology firms have developed solutions to enhance the existing grid’s efficiency. These improvements could be implemented more swiftly and cost-effectively than building new infrastructure. Aaron Scott discusses these developments with NPR’s climate solutions reporter, Julia Simon, highlighting their potential benefits.
