FAA Proposes Permanent Flight Rules Around Trump Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed new permanent flight rules to secure airspace near President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida. This measure aims to protect Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate amid concerns about unauthorized aircraft and drones.

The initiative responds to a request from the U.S. Secret Service, emphasizing national security interests. An FAA spokesperson confirmed the proposed regulations aim to implement Special Air Traffic Rules around the airport.

Special Flight Rules Area Proposed

The FAA suggests creating a Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) around the airport. Aircraft flying below 2,000 feet within one nautical mile must obtain clearance, maintain communication with air traffic control, and transmit a specific transponder code continuously. Strict security standards would apply to aircraft entering and leaving this airspace.

Heightened Drone Concerns

This action follows threats against Trump, including a plot involving explosive-laden drones during an event at the White House. Despite these measures, drone experts like Brett Velicovich stress that regulatory limits are insufficient. Velicovich, a former U.S. Army intelligence analyst, believes active interdiction is essential, as existing measures are inadequate against determined adversaries.

He shared that past incidents, like the attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, involved drones purchased online. Velicovich insists that more counter-drone systems are necessary as FAA regulations alone cannot deter bad actors.

“When you’re a bad actor, that doesn’t matter,” he noted, stressing the need for proactive counter-drone solutions.

Public comments on the FAA’s proposal will be accepted until October 2. The White House has directed inquiries on the security measures to the U.S. Secret Service, which has yet to comment.
