Facility Dogs Offer Comfort in Children’s Hospitals

1 month ago 0

Facility dogs provide comfort and joy in children’s hospitals, extending benefits beyond a friendly face. These specially trained dogs work full time, entering sensitive areas to support patients during their hospital stay. Unlike volunteer therapy dogs, facility dogs can accompany young patients through various medical experiences.

Experts note an increasing presence of facility dogs in children’s hospitals across the country. Research highlights the positive impact on young patients, showing that even brief interactions can improve well-being, reduce stress, and alleviate pain. At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, dogs like Hadley offer emotional support during challenging procedures, inspire activity, and bring normalcy to hospital life.

Photos of these dogs adorn hallways, and they appear in television segments, engaging patients further. Children can even send drawings and letters to them. For instance, five-year-old patient Calvin Owens interacted with facility dog Hadley during a physical therapy visit, with the help of his therapist Paige Torbet.

Hadley and her handler, Schellie Scott, assist patients like Aspen Franklin in art activities, carefully coordinated after medical procedures. These interactions often capture joyful moments and promote healing. Facility dogs like Grover are also active in hospital studios, collaborating with patients like Kira Hodge to produce closed-circuit TV shows broadcasted to patient rooms.

Such activities not only support healing but also create a welcoming environment within the hospital. Facility dog play areas enhance the experience, where dogs can unwind between patient visits. These dogs capture hearts, as seen in images of them graduating or sharing downtime with toys like Buzz Lightyear.

Facility dogs in children’s hospitals represent a growing trend where they play an integral role in patient care, providing unique emotional and physical support.
