Dalia Luque gets her face painted by Amber Lovold during a midnight release party at Politics and Prose in Washington, D.C. They marked the publication of A Court of Splintered Harmony, the latest in Sarah J. Maas’ romantasy series.

The new book in Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses series was released on Tuesday, October 27. The night prior, fans gathered at bookstores across the nation for midnight release parties. In Washington, D.C., dozens dressed as characters from the series, complete with costumes like pointy faerie ears and tiaras, waiting eagerly for A Court of Splintered Harmony.

Among these fans, Dalia Luque wanted to share the moment with fellow enthusiasts. “I just want to have fun with the community,” she shared. Attendees passed time with trivia, friendship bracelets, face painting, and champagne.

This release marks the sixth installment in the series. Amber Lovold painted green designs on Luque’s face, representing the Summer Court, one of the series’ fictional territories. Each Court is distinct, akin to zodiac signs or factions in Divergent.

The series is known for its romantic fantasy elements, involving attractive characters engaging in dramatic and romantic quests. “I’ve always enjoyed escaping to new realities,” Luque commented, appreciating the books’ world-building.

The saga’s hiatus lasted nearly five years. The initial book released in 2015, with regular additions until 2021, paused for several years. Ivana Wong, in a costume of a black dress with sequin stars, won the costume contest at the event.

Wong, thrilled for the new book, expressed her long-standing anticipation. She’s taken days off from work to enjoy the read. Meanwhile, Chastity Mayhaus, new to D.C., hoped to meet fellow book lovers at the party. “I’m hoping to make some connections,” she noted, seeking local book clubs.

Event organizer Nicole Davidow highlighted the event’s significance, being her first midnight release at Politics and Prose. Originally planning for 50, about 70 fans filled the venue. Many social media followers from BookTok eagerly joined in person.

“Online fans want real-life interaction,” Davidow noted about the enthusiastic turnout. As the clock hit midnight, fans rushed to buy their copies. With their books in hand, readers left, ready to immerse themselves in the story.
