The 83rd Venice Film Festival will conclude on Saturday with the announcement of jury awards, including the esteemed Golden Lion for Best Film. The jury, led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, will decide on the awards for film, direction, and acting. A variety of films have gained attention, with some particularly standing out based on audience reactions.
One late addition, NAZA, a documentary about Israeli military insiders discussing the conflict in Gaza, received a 25-minute standing ovation, the longest recorded. This surpasses the previous record of a 24-minute ovation last year for The Voice of Hind Rajab. This film focused on a young girl in Gaza but only secured the Silver Lion. Jim Jarmusch’s film won the Golden Lion that year.
The jury this year includes filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, composer Daniel Blumberg, and filmmakers Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Johnnie To. NAZA is the only documentary in the competition, directed by Rachel Szor and Yuval Abraham, notable for being one of the few films directed by a woman.
Another film, Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh, received positive feedback. This dark comedy stars John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA agents and showcases a strong script. McDonagh’s past films have also been well-received at Venice.
Bunker, written and directed by Florian Zeller, also received applause for over 14 minutes. It stars Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz in a psychological thriller but garnered mixed reviews.
Other films attracting attention include Primetime with Robert Pattinson and Bucking Fastard, where Rooney and Kate Mara performed together.
The festival features international entries like May El Toukhy’s Woman Unknown, Hirokazu Koreeda’s Look Back, and Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love, which focuses on class dynamics in Korea.
With its strong portrayals and thematic depth, Possible Love has become a critic favorite. The jury’s final decisions could still surprise, recalling instances such as the unexpected triumph of Joker in the past.
