Firefighters Halt Progress of Brush Fire in Brentwood Amid Santa Ana Wind Event

2 hours ago 0

A brush fire that ignited near the Department of Veterans Affairs’ West Los Angeles Campus in Brentwood was brought under control by firefighters today, successfully stopping its forward momentum. The blaze erupted early Wednesday morning, coinciding with warnings from officials about increased fire danger due to the Santa Ana winds affecting the region.

Reportedly starting at approximately 2:50 a.m., the fire spanned roughly 1.5 acres before emergency responders contained it. Fortunately, no injuries or structural damage occurred, and the fire’s origin is currently being investigated.

The Santa Ana wind event is set to intensify throughout Los Angeles County, with Wednesday marking its commencement and Thursday seeing an escalation. Meteorologist Ryan Kittell from the National Weather Service in Oxnard noted that sustained winds between 20 and 40 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph.

In mountainous regions, even stronger gusts could hit 70 mph. Kittell emphasized the compounded risk posed by the windy, warm, and dry conditions—with relative humidity levels ranging from 5% to 15% and temperatures soaring between 85 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. He highlighted the additional hazard of dry plant life in the area.

Officials in Malibu have cautioned that Southern California Edison might temporarily suspend power supply to certain areas to minimize the potential fire risk from electrical lines.
