Genevieve McDonald, a Maine lobsterman, former state lawmaker, and political director for Democrat Graham Platner, has become a central figure in the upheaval of Platner’s U.S. Senate campaign. Recent revelations suggest turmoil, stemming from a Wall Street Journal report about explicit messages Platner sent to women and offensive online posts shaking the race.
Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, confided in McDonald during an internal vetting exercise in August 2025. She disclosed Platner’s exchanges of sexually explicit messages shortly after their marriage. McDonald estimated the number of recipients at about a dozen, though a campaign official suggested it was around six. These activities reportedly ceased before the campaign began. Platner used an active profile on the messaging app Kik, with the handle “phustle0331,” displaying a shirtless selfie with identifiable tattoos.
The disclosures come before the June 9 primary, where Platner is favored to secure the Democratic nomination to face Republican Senator Susan Collins. Platner emerged as the likely nominee after Maine Governor Janet Mills suspended her campaign, leaving David Costello as a longshot rival.
The race is crucial as it can influence Senate control. The Cook Political Report labels it a “toss-up,” reflecting Maine’s competitive political nature. Maine has shown a Democratic lean in recent presidential elections, although moderate Republicans have also seen support.
“The United States Senate is not a training ground for redemption. It is a place for proven leaders with moral clarity and integrity,” McDonald told The New York Times.
McDonald gained prominence in 2013 by advocating for commercial gear manufacturer Grundéns to produce women-specific fishing apparel, leading to the Sedna line’s creation. She was the first woman on Maine’s Lobster Advisory Council, building a reputation bridging regulators and fishermen.
In 2018, McDonald won a seat in the Maine House of Representatives, serving two terms focused on fisheries management, rural infrastructure, and coastal economy. She remained engaged in fisheries advocacy after leaving the legislature in 2022.
Joining Platner’s campaign in 2025 as political director, McDonald provided early credibility. Her leadership role exposed her to internal campaign matters, where she learned of Platner’s explicit messages through Gertner. In October 2025, McDonald and three high-level officials resigned after Platner’s offensive Reddit posts resurfaced, citing ignorance of the posts as a resignation reason. The campaign offered McDonald $15,000 for a non-disclosure agreement, which she refused.
McDonald’s departure and accounts of early warnings have made her central to the campaign’s narrative.
Who Is Graham Platner?
Graham Platner is a Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, an oyster farmer, and a Marine Corps veteran embroiled in controversies. Ballotpedia states he served three Iraq combat tours with the Marine Corps before a deployment to Afghanistan with the Maryland Army National Guard. His experiences there influenced his foreign policy and government accountability perspectives.
Returning to Maine, Platner started an oyster farming business and cultivated a public image as a veteran, rural entrepreneur, and anti-establishment figure. His 2025 candidacy against Collins pushed a populist progressive platform, focusing on housing affordability, universal healthcare, and reducing billionaires’ political influence. Endorsements from national figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren bolstered his profile.
However, the campaign faced controversies related to uncovered Reddit posts with offensive language and a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. Platner apologized for his past remarks and said the tattoo is covered now, claiming ignorance of its meaning when obtained. He attributed past online behavior to PTSD struggles post-military discharge.
The controversies have caused instability in his Senate bid, raising questions about vetting and transparency. Despite issues, Platner retains support from parts of the progressive base. Representative Ro Khanna of California defended Platner for promoting character against an unfair economy and persistent wars.
What Did Platner’s Wife Say?
Gertner released a video statement defending her husband and marriage against gossip and media scrutiny. She described the relationship as strong but imperfect, emphasizing the work they put into maintaining it.
In a statement to the Journal, Gertner expressed hurt over leaks, feeling betrayed by someone she considered a friend. She highlighted the challenges they faced, including infertility struggles and the pressures of a high-profile campaign. The couple has sought professional support like marriage counseling to address these issues.
“Graham and I have worked hard on our marriage. We were honest and sought counseling,” Gertner stated, illuminating the couple’s proactive stance on resolving personal challenges during the campaign.
