The remains of a humpback whale, known to Germans as “Timmy” or “Hope,” have been discovered on a Danish beach. This occurrence ended months of public interest as the whale became stranded multiple times in the Baltic Sea.
The whale was first seen off the German coast on March 3. Despite efforts to guide the mammal back to its Atlantic habitat, it was found deceased on May 14 near Anholt, an island located in the Kattegat strait. This strait links the Baltic Sea with the North Sea, positioned between Denmark and Sweden.
The whale’s journey gained significant media attention in Germany, with many updates on its health status. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency plans to conduct an examination to identify the cause of the whale’s death.
Danish news outlet “News5” featured a live broadcast of the whale’s carcass being towed to shore by a truck. The whale’s venture into the Baltic Sea is puzzling, as this is not its typical habitat. Experts suggest the whale could have unintentionally ventured there while pursuing herring or migrating.
