Immigrant Business Owners Plan Lawsuit Against NYC Mayor Over Grocery Store Plan

Several immigrant business owners are preparing to take legal action against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding his proposal to establish city-funded grocery stores. These stores aim to offer food products at prices up to 30% lower than those of traditional retailers.

According to the Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC), they plan to send a letter to Mayor Mamdani’s office outlining their legal strategy. If there’s no response or a meeting within three weeks, the group intends to proceed with the lawsuit.

The MBC is determined to protect small businesses competing with the city-owned stores.

MBC Chairman Frank Garcia expressed a desire for dialogue, stating he has awaited a meeting with city officials for months without success. He asserted that the potential lawsuit is a nonpartisan effort to highlight the challenges faced by small business owners confronting escalating operational costs.

Garcia emphasized the readiness of their legal team and noted the coalition’s broad support from various organizations and community groups. The MBC is composed of members representing diverse business communities including African, Asian, Caribbean, Hispanic, Jewish, and Middle Eastern. In addition, it has backing from city and state legislators such as New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

This announcement follows increased criticism of Mamdani’s plan, with detractors labeling it as a “communist fantasy.” The mayor also confronts a lawsuit from landlords seeking to challenge the city’s rent freeze policy.
