Recent research indicates that regularly consuming sugar-sweetened beverages can significantly raise the risk of developing gastric cancer. A study conducted by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found a 2.45-fold increased risk for individuals who consume such beverages daily compared to those who have them less than once a month. These findings were published in the journal Gastro Hep Advances in August.
Prevalence of Consumption
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 60% of American adults, aged 18 or older, consume sugar-sweetened beverages one or more times daily. Similarly, around 60% of American children partake in these drinks daily, consuming more than 400 calories on average from them. Sugar-sweetened beverages include sodas, energy drinks, and juices with added sugars, excluding fresh fruit juices that are 100% fruit.
Gastric Cancer Statistics
Globally, gastric cancer ranks as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. More than 30,000 Americans annually receive a gastric cancer diagnosis, and over 10,000 die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
Study Findings
The researchers analyzed health data from over 112,000 U.S. adults, discovering a significant correlation between regular consumption of sugary beverages and increased gastric cancer incidence, especially among women. However, artificially sweetened beverages did not show the same association, though previous studies have linked artificial sweeteners to negative metabolic and gut health effects.
Dr. Manish Shah, a professor of medicine and gastrointestinal oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian, described the findings as potentially remarkable. He noted increased awareness of cancer risks associated with high fructose and sugar additives in diets, with fructose previously linked to colon cancer development, albeit with a modest risk.
Potential Mechanisms
Researchers continue to explore the connection between high sugar consumption and certain cancers. Dr. Shah suggested multiple factors might contribute, highlighting that fructose could alter gut microbiota, increasing cancer risk. Other research has associated sugary beverages with weight gain and metabolic changes, with obesity linked to cancer in various studies.
