Jack Pyburn’s Transition from College to NFL Raises Financial Questions

1 hour ago 0

Jack Pyburn’s Journey from College Football to the NFL

Last week, estimates suggested Jack Pyburn might earn around $1 million in 2026 if he returned to LSU after being cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the Kansas City Chiefs altered this path by claiming Pyburn off waivers, continuing his NFL career as part of their roster.

NFL versus College Earnings

Pyburn’s rookie salary is set at $885,000, less than what he could have made in college under Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules. This situation highlights how college football has become a financial competitor for the NFL in certain cases.

Pyburn’s College Career

Pyburn wasn’t drafted in April following his season at LSU. Previously, he played at the University of Florida in 2023 and 2024. During his time at LSU, he started 11 out of 12 games, recording 52 tackles, 2 sacks, and 5.5 tackles for loss.

Legal Battles and Returns to College

Pyburn was involved in a Louisiana lawsuit that secured a temporary restraining order, enabling athletes to play in college during the 2026 academic year. Players meeting specific criteria could return to school if they terminated their pro contracts and repaid earnings.

Pyburn planned to do this with the Buccaneers due to anticipated cuts, which occurred. He was guaranteed $115,000, including a $15,000 signing bonus. His contract wasn’t terminated, so the Chiefs retain his rights.

Decision to Remain in the NFL

After being claimed by the Chiefs, Pyburn informed LSU of his decision to withdraw from the eligibility lawsuit, choosing to remain in the NFL.
