Kelsey Plum’s Future with the Los Angeles Sparks Uncertain

Two off-seasons ago, All-Star guard Kelsey Plum requested a trade from the Las Vegas Aces. She had won two WNBA titles with the team. In January 2025, she moved to the Los Angeles Sparks.

“I just remember thinking that offseason, ‘If you really are serious about it, and you believe you are as good as you think, and you think you can impact winning at the highest level, there’s only one way to find out,'” Plum shared with Sue Bird last summer.

Plum has made significant efforts to guide the Sparks to their first playoff appearance since 2020. However, she faces challenges with the team’s personnel decisions. Plums’s future with the team looks uncertain.

Plum signed a one-year deal worth $999,999 as a free agent. Yet, sources hint that the 31-year-old guard does not plan to re-sign with the Sparks. They spoke anonymously because they are not cleared to comment publicly. Both Plum and her agent, Zack Miller of WME Basketball, did not comment to The Athletic on her plans.

The WNBA trade deadline is approaching on Aug. 2. Annie Costabile from The Athletic identified Plum as a top trade candidate. Yet, the Sparks have not engaged in substantial trade discussions regarding Plum.

Earlier this season, Plum was the top scorer and offensive player in the WNBA. Injuries have limited her participation to 12 games. She sprained her ankle in May, causing her to miss a week. She played six games in June before a lower left leg injury sidelined her since June 24.

Plum has not been prone to injuries in her career. Whether traded or not, she is expected to have a wide market in free agency next offseason.
