Kenny Chesney and Bill Maher Discuss Celebrity Political Endorsements

1 day ago 0

Country music star Kenny Chesney spoke with Bill Maher on Monday about the role of celebrities in politics. On Maher’s ‘Club Random’ podcast, Chesney questioned Maher about his opinion on Bruce Springsteen, a fellow New Jersey native known for his political activism.

Maher acknowledged his admiration for Springsteen but expressed concern over the politicization of his public persona. Springsteen’s outspoken liberal stance, including his involvement in the anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ tour, sparked controversy among his fan base.

Bill Maher criticized celebrity political endorsements following the 2024 election. He described them as increasingly perceived as out of touch by the public.

‘I just refuse to do it,’ Chesney stated. He expressed gratitude to Maher for not pressuring him to discuss politics during his November appearance on the show.

Maher, who enjoys discussing a variety of topics with his guests, observed that some figures, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, invite political discourse. However, he agreed with Chesney’s sentiment that not every celebrity should engage in political commentary.

Chesney emphasized his belief that, as a musician, his platform should not be used to influence voter behavior. He noted that audiences come to his performances to escape pervasive political messaging found in other media.

Maher, initially optimistic about musician Taylor Swift’s potential political influence, has grown skeptical of celebrity endorsements after high-profile losses such as Kamala Harris in 2024. He argued that celebrities’ detachment from everyday life often undermines their political impact.

Reflecting on their own knowledge of political matters, John Mellencamp shared with Maher, ‘We don’t know anything,’ pointing out the longstanding disconnect between entertainers and the political sphere.
