LeBron James, the new superstar of the Philadelphia 76ers, has become the center of discussion among NBA circles due to his unique commuting method between New York and Philadelphia. The Fanatics-branded helicopter he uses has garnered attention just before the NBA’s 2026-27 season. Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the financial arrangements, calling them ‘perfectly appropriate.’
James, who played in the Sixers’ preseason finale, commented on his choice of travel. He described the helicopter as ‘just another way of transportation.’ The journey allows him to travel from the team’s facility to New York City with ease.
James stated, ‘Yeah, I’ve done it before’ when asked about the helicopter commute.
Fanatics, a company once affiliated with the 76ers through former minority owner Michael Rubin, covers the costs of these commutes. Reports indicate that the expenses could accumulate to nearly $1 million for the season, depending on usage frequency. One-way trips for home games are roughly estimated at $4,000 each, summing to $328,000 for 41 home games, as per The Athletic.
Michael Rubin decided to sell his stake in the Sixers in 2022, aiming to prevent conflicts as Fanatics expanded into sports betting. Having once purchased the 76ers as part of a group for around $290 million in 2011, Rubin sold his estimated 10% stake to focus on his ventures. Despite selling his part, Rubin remains an enthusiastic fan of the team.
During an appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ Adam Silver emphasized the propriety of the deal, stating there are no concerns regarding rules or salary-cap circumvention. Silver made clear that this is a personal arrangement between James and Fanatics, without team involvement.
Silver stated, ‘He has a deal with Fanatics… there’s no rules issue whatsoever.’
James’ decision to reside in New York City while playing for the 76ers isn’t a first. JJ Redick, now the Los Angeles Lakers coach, previously lived in New York during his tenure with Philadelphia. James’ helicopter travel, however, has drawn more focus especially among teammates reacting to its noise as it departs from the team’s facility.
In a recent preseason game, the Philadelphia 76ers won against the New York Knicks. James interacted with teammates, including Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, during the game. With the season underway, James and his teammates are set to play the reigning champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. As he continues to commute via helicopter, the conversation around this unique travel method in the NBA is likely to persist.
