Minnesota state House Speaker Lisa Demuth emerged victorious in the Republican primary for governor, surpassing Trump ally Mike Lindell. NBC News reported Demuth’s win, setting the stage for a competition against Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar in the general election.
Demuth’s triumph over Lindell, the MyPillow founder known for promoting election conspiracy theories, was unexpected. Lindell had been leading in limited pre-election polls and had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. However, Lindell’s campaign struggled in the final weeks due to attacks from other Republicans. Questions about Lindell’s residency raised by the Minnesota Republican Party chairman contributed to the challenge.
Since 2020, Lindell has faced various legal issues due to his support of Trump’s debunked election theories. At a recent Minnesota Farmfest forum, Klobuchar, alongside other GOP governor candidates, accused them of being aligned with Trump.
Demuth, along with other Republicans including Trump, has criticized Democrats over significant fraud scandals involving Medicaid and pandemic aid in Minnesota. Allegations suggest that hundreds of millions designated for welfare programs were misappropriated. At the Farmfest, Demuth attributed these issues to “incompetent Democrat control.” She highlighted the Fraud Prevention Agency Oversight Committee, which she established while leading the state House, as a response to these fraud cases.
Democratic Governor Tim Walz had initially planned to run for a third term but withdrew, citing the fraud scandals. This paved the way for Klobuchar to enter the race. She is among four senators running for governor this year.
Despite Demuth’s win, Republicans face challenges due to Minnesota’s political trends. In the last presidential election, then-Vice President Kamala Harris secured Minnesota by about four percentage points, when Walz was her running mate. Republicans will have to navigate these dynamics in November to secure the Governor’s Residence.
